INSPIRE: Pink Lounge

With winter here my favourite place in our home is our lounge. The perfect place to curl up on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate and a movie or a great book. I stumbled across this pic on Pinterest a couple of days ago and fell in love with the pink wall and inviting sofa.

FREEBIE: Wanderment Wallpaper

In a world were words are being abbreviated and expressing emotions is reduced to emoticons, I sometimes search for words to express an action or state of being. Today the word I'm loving is wanderment...the act of wandering or roaming. I like to think that carries over to inspirational and creative roaming. So today I made you all a little desktop wallpaper to remind you that your life should be a place of wanderment...

Simply "click" on the size that best suits your screen resolution, the image will open in a new window, right click on the image and "save image as" to a location of your choice, then add as desktop wallpaper as you normally would.

DIY: Terrarium

Recently my aunt moved to the UK and decided to give me her beautiful but HUGE rose vase. I love it but it requires a massive amount of flowers to look even remotely full. So I decided to use it for something a little more permanent...a terrarium. I have always wanted to make one especially because we live in an apartment, its like having a mini garden indoors.

Here is what you will need:

- large glass vase (make sure you can easily fit your hand through the opening)
- ferns
- small leafed ground covering plant (I chose peace in the home)
- potting soil
- washed river sand
- small pebbles
- decorative stones or crystals (I chose rough cut rose quartz)

Step 1: Rinse your vase and all your pebbles with fresh water. Allow to air dry.

Step 2: Start with a layer of pebbles at the bottom.

Step 3: Now add a layer of the river sand. The river sand helps with drainage as the vase does not have holes at the bottom.

Step 4: Add another layer of pebbles. If you would like to be a little more decorative you could place a ring of decorative crystals or stones around the perimeter of the vase and then fill in the center using the cheaper pebbles. This is what I did with my second layer of stones.

Step 5: Add a layer of potting soil. Ensure that this layer is deep enough to accommodate the roots of your plants.

Step 6: Plant it up. Make sure that you have enough space for your plants to grow. In my case because the vase is not as big as I thought I have planted the ferns in such a manner that they will eventually grow out of the top. This is also the time to add some decorative stones or figurines.

And thats it. To water your terrarium use a spay bottle or an eyedropper. Remember to water little amounts at a time as too much water will cause condensation and rot.

Enjoy making your own touch of green for your home.

COOK: Gingerbread

Growing up my gran used to bake gingerbread for us all the time. It is something that reminds me of warm autumn days by the pool. She recently shared the beloved recipe with me, so I thought I would share I with you.

Gingerbread

1 cup syrup
125g butter
¼ cup milk
1 cup water
1 egg
3½ cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp mixed spice
1½ tsp cinnamon
1½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

1) Pre-heat the oven to 180°C and grease a loaf tin.

2) Place butter and syrup in a bowl and melt together in the microwave.

3) Measure out all the dry ingredients (except the bicarbonate of soda) into a mixing bowl.

4) Add the melted butter/syrup mixture as well as the milk and water to the dry ingredients.

5) Beat the egg well and add to the mixture.

6) Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in a little boiled water and add to the mixture. Mix the batter one more time.

7) Pour the mixture into you prepared loaf tin.

8) Bake for 1 hour. Test with a needle pierced through the center of the loaf. If the needle comes out dry it is ready. Allow to cool slightly before removing from the tin.

This gingerbread is great at any time of the day. Serve spread with a little butter. It is also great toasted.

Yum!
